1 Where does Static come from?
A: Static Charge is generated due to Friction or Separation between insulators.
2. Can a Power ground be used for ESD Ground purpose?
A: A dedicated ESD Ground is recommended. The use of Power ground for ESD purposes, though possible, should be the last alternative.
3. Do Garments generate Static?
A: In general all Garments generate Static. The level is very low in Cotton and very high in synthetic Garments made out of Polyester, Nylon, etc. Silk and Woollen are high Static generators.
4. Is a Wrist strap alone sufficient for ESD Control?
A: Wrist strap is a Personnel grounding device capable of taking away the charges from an individual, but it cannot take care of ESD Control in the case of other damage models.
5. Is paper work on the Assembly table safe?
A: Paper can be a high Static generator and should not therefore be in the neighbourhood of sensitive electronic devices.
6. What is Lightning?
A: Lightning is the most spectacular Electro Static Discharge observed in nature. The potential of the Discharge can be more than 80,000V.
7. Can an Antistatic bag be used to store and transport sensitive devices?
A: Antistatic bags though they do not generate Static, permit Static fields to pass through them. Therefore any device, which is stored in these bags, is not afe from external Static fields.
8. Can Static be eliminated from insulators by grounding?
A: No.
9. How to eliminate charge on Insulators?
A: Special device known as Air Ionizer is used to neutralize the charges on insulators in situ.
10. Can a Computer Screen generate Static?
A: Yes, if the Computer monitor is based on a Cathode Ray Tube it can be Static generating.
11. Can Keyboard or Mouse of a Computer be Static generating?
A: Quite often Keyboard, Mouse and Mouse pads generate Static.
12. Is combing hair permitted in the Vicinity of a sensitive electronic device?
A: Hair is a very high Static generator and the practice of combing in an ESD Protected Zone is not permitted.
13. Is Eating and Drinking permitted in ESD Sensitive areas?
A: The food containers like Pet bottles, paper cups, resin coated paper plates, etc used for beverages or foods can generate high levels of Static. This is the reason why eating and drinking is forbidden in ESD Sensitive areas.
